WHY TRAVEL
TO TAJIKISTAN?

Few countries in the world harbour such spectacular attractions yet are so little known as Tajikistan – many of us can’t even locate it on the map.

Tajikistan is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The Pamir Mountains, also known as the “Roof of the World,” are a must-see for any nature lover. These majestic peaks, which reach heights of over 7,000 meters, offer breathtaking views and a chance to hike and explore.

Additionally, because tourism is not yet a major industry in Tajikistan, you will often find yourselves with a sense of authenticity and immersion that you might not find in more popular tourist destinations.

The Persian suffix “-stan” means “place of” or “country,” so the word Tajikistan literally means “Land of the Tajik people”.

For years, it was disconnected from the outside world while under the ruling of the Soviet Union and is only open for travel since 1997.

Any trip to Tajikistan is an adventure. For visitors tolerant of a few traveling hardships – outdoor toilets, cold water, potholed roads – the country more than compensates with a rare glimpse into life on ‘The Roof of the World’.

Many people assume that Tajikistan, a predominantly Islamic country is oppressive to it’s women, but it isn’t what most think. Despite significant challenges, including gender disparities and children marriages, a bit of progress is being made. Women’s literacy rates are decently high, more women are working, and female representation in parliament is increasing. While many women still lead traditional lives, these shifts suggest a gradual change toward improving women’s rights and opportunities, but it is still a long way to go.
